Mountain Bladder Fern

Cystopteris montana

Cystopteris montana

Very rare in damp alkaline rock crevices in the mountains.

Frond (including stalk) c 10-40 cm long.  Lowest pinna c 2-7 cm long.

ID: Like Brittle Bladder Fern but frond 3-pinnate, nearly 4-pinnate at the base.  Lowest pinna much the longest, giving the whole frond a triangular shape.  Fronds arise singly, not tufted.  Few scales at stem base, like C fragilis and not like a Dryopteris species which is densely scaly there.

Other features: Fronds arise in May from long slender creeping rhizome and die around September.  Sori small and round, covered by a white toothed indusium that soon falls off.
