Occasionaly in woods or heathery ground. Height c 20-50 cm. Flower c 12-18 mm long. Skye ID: Unmistakable in flower. Flower-tube normally more yellow than in picture on left. Picture below shows pale cream flowers. There is a possibility that the rare Small Cow-wheat (M sylvaticum) could one day be found on Skye. This has the flower-tube more or less equal to the calyx (including teeth) in length, whereas our species has it much longer. Other features: Flowers in pairs, both facing the same way, in axils of bracts. Sometimes deep yellow. Lower bracts are like leaves but upper often have long linear lobes at base. Sepal teeth curved upwards (radiating outwards in Small Cow-wheat). Lower lip of flower has underside in line with flower tube (deflexed in Small Cow-wheat) |
