Flowers typically 15 mm across

Very common in Argyll, becoming rare north of Morvern.  In woods or scrubby areas

Flower diameter c 15 mm

ID: Spines have one or more buds along their length.

Other features: Flowers in March, before the leaves appear.  Fruit a bluish-black berry.
