Was apparently unknown in Skye in 1980 but is now quite frequent in damp rough ground, usually near villages.  Not a garden escape, just a native British plant spreading northwards.

Flower diameter c 15-25 mm.  Leaves c 6-12 cm long.  Plant c 80-180 cm tall.

Skye ID: Stem densely covered along its entire length with spreading hairs.  Stigma 4-lobed.  Told from E parviflorum by flowers much larger and a rich purplish colour.

Other features: Forms dense stands.  Has a softer look and much larger flowers than other Epilobium sp.  Leaves unstalked, their edges slightly decurrent down the stem for a short distance.
