Common on wet rocks and boggy ground at all altitudes. Flowers c 1-1.5 cm across. Leaves 2-8 cm long. Skye ID: Told from Pale Butterwort by: flowers > 7 mm across, medium to dark purple, not pale; leaves > 2 cm long, yellowish-green not purplish-green. No other confusion species. Other features: Much commoner and larger than Pale Butterwort, which is generally hard to spot among heathy vegetation. Leaf-rosettes of Common Butterwort are conspicuous even when not in flower. Leaves and stems covered with sticky glands which trap insects which the plant feeds on. |
