Rapidly increasing and now common on bare ground, particularly on paths and tracks.

Tepals c 3-4 mm long.  Plant somewhat shorter than the common conspicuous rushes, typically 30 cm tall.

Skye ID: Leaves and leaf-like bracts grooved.  Lowest bract much longer than infloresence.

Other features: Tepals narrow and acutely pointed.  Fruit egg-shaped, much shorter than tepals.  Leaf-sheaths end in a pair of pale flimsy, papery auricles which are longer than broad.  Leaves all, or nearly all, from base (not counting leaf-like bracts which are part of inflorescence).  Tepals green becoming pale brown, never dark.
