Frequent in lochs and wet areas of ground. Very tall, can be over 3 m. Spikelets 10-16 mm Skye ID: Ligule replaced by a fringe of hairs. Spikelets contain long silky hairs and 1-5 lemmas extending beyond the hairs as fine points whose ends are approximately level. Other features: Our tallest grass, forming large stands in lochs and sometimes in wet ground with no standing water. Panicles purple. Leaves fall off in autumn but stems and panicles remain through winter. |
