Common in grassland and saltmarshes. Spikelets 5-14 mm long. ID: Typical Fescue spikelets as in pic below. Leaves do not have sickle-shaped auricles at junction with stem. Sheaths of young shoots are tubular, not overlapping at the back (but they split when older). Other features: Spikelets often reddish. Leaves often glaucous in saltmarsh forms. Spreads by stolons (unlike Sheep's Fescue). Leaves of sterile shoots inrolled and < 1mm wide, stem leaves may be inrolled or flat (those of Sheep's Fescue never flat or > 0.7 mm wide) |
