Rare, on sandy shores only

Spikelets 15-28 mm long

Skye ID: Spikelets alternating up the axis, broadside-on to it, and not overlapping  the next one up on the same side.  Upper surface of leaf prominently ribbed  (ribs perhaps 6-12; much more in Common Couch) and densely hairy with very short hairs, not with scattered medium-length hairs.  Leaf without small projections (auricles) where it joins the stem.

Other features: Glaucous in colour, very smooth, almost waxy, looking.  Spreads by creeping rhizomes.
