Very common in grassland, roadsides, rough ground and as a garden weed.

Spikelets (ex awn) c 8-10 mm long, the awn protruding typically a further 10 mm.  Plant to 150 cm high, one of the tallest grasses.  Leaves to 10 mm wide.

Skye ID: One awn per spikelet, plus general appearance as in pic and size guidelines is enough to ID it.

Other features: Spikelet actually has 2 flowers, the lower male and awned, the upper female and not awned or with a short bristle protruding past the tip.
