Not native; occasional in woods. Height to c 150 cm. Spikelets c 2-3 mm long. Leaves c 3-8 mm wide. Skye ID: Told as an Agrostis by the spikelets being one-flowered, completely enclosed (when not open) by two more or less equal glumes about 2-3 mm long. Much larger than other Agrostis sp, which have leaves 5 mm wide at most, usually much less. Other features: Panicle very open in flower and remaining open in fruit, unlike A stolonifera which closes up again when in fruit and always looks denser than this species. Spikelets have no awns, or rarely a very short one. Spreads by underground rhizomes, not above-ground stolons like A stolonifera. Palea more than half as long as lemma. |
