Frequent in lochs and bog pools Leaves c 4-6 mm wide. Fruiting spike c 3-8 cm long, c 1 cm across. Fruit c 4-6 mm long including a beak of c 1.5 mm Skye ID: Owing to size of spike and general appearance, cannot be confused with any other Skye Sedge when in fruit. Spikes look like a rather narrow bottle brush. Other features: Easily the most robust of the sedges commonly found on Skye, a tall water plant. Fruit bottle-shaped. Stems and leaves often glaucous (bluish-green) but sometimes not. Bladder Sedge, Carex vesicaria, is in some old Skye lists but the records were errors for C rostrata, although there is always a chance that this species could be found. C vesicaria has the fruit ascending, not horizontal like C rostrata. Also C vesicaria has dark brown male glumes while C rostrata has rather pale brown ones. Water Sedge has a similar arrangement of male and female spikes to Bottle Sedge, but the fruits are almost beakless. |
