Common in lochs and bog pools Leaves c 4-6 mm wide. Fruiting spike c 3-8 cm long, c 1 cm across. Fruit c 4-6 mm long including a beak of c 1.5 mm ID: Leaves glaucous on upper side. Spikes look like a rather narrow bottle brush, with the long-beaked fruit spreading horizontally. Bladder Sedge, Carex vesicaria, has the fruit ascending, not horizontal like C rostrata. Also C vesicaria has dark brown male glumes while C rostrata has rather pale brown ones. Other features: A tall water plant. Fruit bottle-shaped. Water Sedge has a similar arrangement of male and female spikes to Bottle Sedge, but the fruits are almost beakless. |
