Widespread but local, in moorland and hill ground flushed with alkaline water. Stems c 10-25 cm tall. Spikes c 8-16 mm long. ID: Each stem has a single flower-spike which is either all male or all female (the occasional mixed-sex one may be found). So at fruiting time either all glumes will have fruits or none will. Other features: Fruits spread horizontally when mature, picture on left is of female spike after fruit formation but before maturity. There is no bract at the base of the spike such as most Carex species have. Leaves less than 1 mm wide, channelled, shorter than stem. |
