Common on recently disturbed ground, especially in gardens, farmyards and rubbish heaps, also on shore near strandline.

Flower diameter c 5-9 mm

ID: Single line of hairs down stem (visible in picture below where face-on in places).  Stamens 3-8 per flower (examine several).

Other features: Often the dominant weed in vegetable gardens.  5 petals not longer than the 5 sepals and divided to their base so appearing to be 10.  Leaves not long and narrow like Stitchworts, but pointed oval, and the lower ones with stalks as long as blade.

Lesser Chickweed (S pallida) has 1-3 stamens, and no long-stalked leaves.  Greater Chickweed (S neglecta) has 8-10 stamens and is a larger plant.  Both are very rare in the area.
