Upright frond c 30 mm across at widest

Occasional in upland rock crevices

Fronds 10-60 cm long, longest pinnae 1-3 cm

Skye ID: Glossy and stiff, the pinnae not divided or lobed (apart from a single lobe, which may or may not be well-defined, on the upper side next to the rachis) but with outward pointing spine-like teeth.  Beware stunted specimens of Hard Shield Fern.  These always have the pinnae much more lobed than in these pictures, and have the spines on the lower side of each pinna parallel to the pinna's edge; in Holly Fern these point outwards.

Other features: Pinnae overlapping, the middle ones broadest, basal ones much smaller.  Sori in two rows on each pinna, with a round whitish covering.
